Grassroots Community-Led grants

Our Grassroots Community-led program is where organisations and the community are in the driver’s seat. Come to us with your big (or small!) ideas to contribute towards making your community better and healthier.

Applications are open year-round, and we’ll be looking to support grants which align to our priorities.

What we can and can’t support

Lotterywest can provide support to projects or activities that contribute to an outcome in the Community Investment Framework. The grant request must also have a clear community benefit.

Grants can be used to support income-generating activities if they are working towards an outcome in the Community Investment Framework and have a clear public benefit. All profits must be directed towards achieving the Community Investment Framework outcome.

Eligible Applicants

You are an eligible organisation if you’re:

- a not-for-profit organisation (i.e. none of the profits go to owners or shareholders); or
- a local government authority.

Smaller not-for-profits may prefer to be auspiced by an eligible organisation. Contact us for more information if you are considering this approach, noting that your application must be accompanied by a signed Auspicing agreement.  A template agreement is available here.

Your organisation also needs to:

- be an Australian entity and operating within Western Australia
- not be operating on behalf of the State or Federal Government
- have the authority to undertake the proposed grant activities
- have an organisational structure that does not allow for the distribution of profit or personal gain during operation and/or in the event of wind up.

There are a few constraints to what we support.

Exclusions

  • Projects taking place outside Western Australia
  • Retrospective, contingency or on-going operational costs
  • Religious activities (although welfare and community service activities of faith-based groups can be funded)
  • Competitive sporting activities
  • Projects or initiatives that could/should be funded through contractual or individualised Government funding arrangements
  • Replacement of assets previously funded with a Lotterywest grant

In addition, given Lotterywest’s significant annual statutory allocation to the Department of Health and the Department’s Future Health Research and Innovation Fund, support for medical and health research and its translation and/or dissemination will not be provided through Lotterywest’s direct grants budget.

Grant limits

  • The minimum grant request is $3,000
  • Maximum $15,000 for organisations not registered for GST or that are unincorporated (unless auspiced by an eligible organisation)
  • Otherwise there is no upper grant limit. Grants should be reasonable and represent value for money
  • Lotterywest is a complementary grant-maker and expects others will contribute appropriately to the cost of initiatives (financially and/or in kind)
  • The GST component of items purchased by the grant is not supported.
