A significant shift is underway in how capital is being used to address some of society's most pressing challenges. Across Australia and the Asia Pacific, investors, philanthropists, governments and community organisations are increasingly looking beyond financial returns alone and asking a critical question:

How can investment capital create measurable social and environmental impact?

As Australia enters a once-in-a-generation wealth transfer worth an estimated $3.5 trillion, UNSW Business School has launched a flagship Asia Pacific $1 million research initiative to ensure this capital drives measurable social and economic outcomes rather than reinforcing inequality.

The recent launch of the Asia Pacific Impact Investing Research Consortium by the Centre for Social Impact and the UNSW School of Banking and Finance signals a major step forward for the sector. The initiative brings together researchers, philanthropic organisations and financial institutions to strengthen the evidence, frameworks and market infrastructure needed to support the next generation of impact investing.

The Consortium represents a new model of collaboration between academia and industry, bringing together leading researchers, philanthropic organisations, and financial institutions to co-design and deliver rigorous, practice-informed research. It is co-funded by UNSW Business School, and a consortium of industry partners including Minderoo and UBS.

Looking Ahead

Impact investing in Australia has grown rapidly in recent years, increasing eightfold since 2020. While this reflects rising investor confidence and demand for capital aligned with social and environmental outcomes, the next phase of growth will depend on stronger coordination, clearer measurement frameworks, and robust evidence to guide decision-making. Research, evidence and collaboration will play a critical role in shaping this future.

By strengthening market infrastructure, improving access to data and supporting innovative financing models, initiatives such as the Asia Pacific Impact Investing Research Consortium are helping create an ecosystem where investment can deliver both financial returns and lasting social value.

The opportunity ahead is immense. With trillions of dollars set to change hands over the coming decades, the decisions made today have the potential to shape stronger communities, more inclusive economies and a more sustainable future for generations to come.
