Reflecting on Philanthropy Australia's Strategy 2033, Australian Communities Foundation CEO Andrew Binns describes the strategy as an important milestone for a maturing philanthropy sector. He suggests that Australia's generosity extends far beyond traditional philanthropy, and that the future lies in recognising and mobilising all forms of giving through stronger collaboration, shared accountability and community leadership.
Binns believes philanthropy has an increasingly important role to play in addressing complex challenges such as climate change, inequality and social fragmentation. Rather than acting solely as a source of funding, he sees philanthropy as a catalyst for systems change, building relationships, supporting advocacy, sharing knowledge, and backing communities to lead solutions.
He welcomes the strategy's emphasis on strengthening First Nations self-determination, fostering ecosystem-wide partnerships, and creating more flexible pathways for giving. Ultimately, Binns sees Strategy 2033 as an invitation for the sector to think bigger about generosity, share power more willingly, and work collectively to deliver greater long-term social impact.
