Sectors band together for social housing solutions

With an estimated 47,000 Queenslanders on the social housing waiting list, advocates hope this project will set a new benchmark for government-community organisation partnerships in addressing homelessness.

Queensland Minister for Housing and Public Works, Sam O'Connor, highlighted that the government is currently working with more than 30 community housing providers to deliver thousands of social and affordable homes across the state.

Simultaneously, Mission Australia is developing 185 units for social and affordable housing in Toowoomba, comprising four apartment buildings with 89 social housing dwellings and 96 affordable homes.

Mission Australia CEO Sharon Callister has called for all political parties to prioritise housing investment by boosting social and affordable homes to 10% of all housing stock, mandating affordable homes in new developments and creating a $500 million Homelessness Prevention Transformation Fund.

"Our homelessness services have seen a 19 per cent increase in demand in the past year," said Callister. "Preventative measures and early intervention benefit not only people in need but are also the most cost effective and responsible approach."
