Australia’s social enterprise sector has reached a significant milestone, with a Unified Definition for Social Enterprises now agreed upon nationally.
For the more than 12,000 businesses-for-good operating across the country, this means a simpler and more consistent way to demonstrate their impact. Previously, social enterprises often had to navigate different definitions and requirements depending on the organisation, location or opportunity.
Now, major verifiers, including Social Traders and People and Planet First, alongside Australia’s social enterprise peak bodies, are aligning behind the same national framework.
The shared definition is built around five global standards that recognise what makes a social enterprise distinct:
- Purpose – creating positive social or environmental impact
- Operations – embedding impact into how the organisation works
- Revenue – generating income through trade
- Use of Surplus – reinvesting profits to further impact
- Structure – being structured to support purpose-driven outcomes
With all state-based peak bodies adopting this framework moving forward, the change creates greater clarity, consistency and recognition for social enterprises across Australia.
