Mental Health Counsellor

This role will be involved in the provision of clinical assessment, psychological focused strategies, counselling, case work, group work and therapeutic support for the Frankston community in our Accessible Psychological Interventions (API) Program. This involves working with clients with complex mental health issues and those with multiple presenting issues.

  • ABOUT THE ROLE

This role will be involved in the provision of clinical assessment, psychological focused strategies, counselling, case work, group work and therapeutic support for the Frankston community in our Accessible Psychological Interventions (API) Program. This involves working with clients with complex mental health issues and those with multiple presenting issues.

The role is currently fixed term until 30/11/2023 however there may be a possibility for extension.

To be successful in the role you must meet the minimum criteria below including Mental Health Accreditation. Funding for this position is based on the counsellor having Mental Health Accreditation. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

  • Provision of therapeutic counselling and group work interventions for clients with a mental illness, evidence based intake, assessment and counselling
  • Professional and ethical management of client case load
  • facilitation of API group psych-education programs
  • Provide EAP services in consultation with the Workplace Service Manager
  • Primary consultation with organisations where a critical incident has occurred, followed by intervention on-site or other venues as arranged with affected employees
  • Identify and follow up risk issues as required
  • Refer clients to internal (e.g. FaRS psycho-educational group programs, MBCP) or external (e.g. primary care, stepped care, specialist agencies) as appropriate
  • Undertake additional duties as directed by management in accordance with grade

ABOUT YOU

  • Tertiary qualifications in Psychology / Social Work / Occupational Therapy / Mental Health Nursing
  • Mental Health Accreditation(s)
  • Registration with AHPRA (psychologists must have general registration) or AASW
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in counselling (focused psychological strategies)
  • Demonstrated understanding of client centred practice, risk assessment and safety planning
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Mental Health Act 2014
  • Computer literacy
  • Experience working with Aboriginal people, people from CALD backgrounds, people with substance use disorders, children, people who use family violence and/or victim survivors is highly desirable
  • Experience in psycho-educational group programs, EAP counselling and critical incident responses is desirable
