Social Ventures Australia (SVA) Announces Incoming CEO James Toomey

In October Social Ventures Australia (SVA) Chair, Rob Koczkar, announced James Toomey as the organisation’s incoming CEO, commencing in January 2025.

The appointment follows an extensive national and international search, led by People for Purpose, after Suzie Riddell’s announcement that she would step down as SVA CEO at the end of this year.

Mr Toomey brings a background in social work and extensive experience in the NGO sector in Australia and the UK. His recent roles include CEO of Mission Australia and Deputy Secretary within NSW Department of Communities and Justice.

Mr Toomey has a track record of collaboration with a number of NGOs that has led to the formation of the Constellation Project, the Possibility Project and the End Street Sleeping Collaboration. He also has a long-standing connection with SVA from his time at Mission Australia and the Goodstart syndicate.

“I’m delighted to have been asked to succeed Suzie as CEO of Social Ventures Australia,” said Toomey.

“My breadth of experience in the social sector has allowed me to think deeply about the causes and impacts of disadvantage on individuals and communities and develop a clear sense of what better outcomes look like.

“SVA is in a unique position in the social sector, and I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to work with the team and partners to drive better outcomes.”

SVA Chair Rob Koczkar said the Board were committed to finding the right person to lead SVA; someone who will champion the organisation’s innovation agenda and drive maximum impact in Australian communities.

“We are delighted with the appointment,” said Mr Koczkar.

“We look forward to working with Mr Toomey towards an Australia where all people and communities can thrive.”
