UN International Human Rights Day
December 10th is UN International Human Rights Day. The theme for 2025 is Our Everyday Essentials - re-engaging people with human rights by showing how they shape our daily lives, often in ways you may not always notice (or remember to do).
It includes:
- having a roof over your head
- everyone having the same safety, dignity and freedom
- respect everywhere
- equality - no more, no less
- rights, no excuses
Here's some of the Greatest Good | B Corp™ members creating positive social change and increasing human rights:
- All of the Good Things Pty Ltd - creating gift packs of artisan products made in Fair Trade conditions.
- Be Hers Ltd - educate the public about the growing issues of slave labour, and exploitation.
- Checklist Legal - helping women in business and law create powerful, values-led contracts that make the world a better place.
- Christie Centre Inc - increasing opportunities for social participation, inclusion, wellbeing and meaningful work.
- Good4Business | Certified B Corp™ - empowering small and medium business to align their profitability with purpose and sustainability.
- Hotel Etico Australia - employing and training young people with disability in hospitality and independent living skills.
- Karuna Dawn - partnering with ethical and social enterprises that offer fair trade practices, and employment opportunities to those marginalised, disadvantaged and most vulnerable among us.
Human rights are positive, essential and attainable. They begin with us, in the small everyday choices we make to be respectful, speak up against unfairness, listen to the voices that can go unheard and so much more.
Here's some small acts you can take to improve the world:
- donating things you no longer need that someone else can use
- picking up litter in the community
- buying second-hand instead of new
- holding the door open for others
- cook a meal for someone in need
- help a neighbour carry groceries
- walk or ride a bike, instead of driving
- give up your seat on public transport to someone who needs it more
- call someone who lives alone and check in with them
